Manchester United are making rapid strides in their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson and are also closing in on signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.

The addition of Ederson is expected to bring creativity and dynamism to United’s midfield, especially with Casemiro and possibly Manuel Ugarte set to leave Old Trafford this summer.

According to Niccolo Ceccarini of Tuttomercatoweb, negotiations for the Brazilian midfielder are almost complete, with Ederson preparing to say goodbye to La Dea shortly. However, the Premier League giants are not stopping there, as they are now close to finalising an agreement with Newcastle United for Italian international Sandro Tonali as well.

While the exact transfer fee has not yet been disclosed, Ceccarini expressed strong confidence that Tonali’s next destination will indeed be Old Trafford.

Juventus had shown previous interest in bringing Tonali back to Serie A, but their financial constraints prevented them from making a concrete move.

From a tactical perspective, Tonali’s profile aligns more closely with Casemiro’s than Ederson’s does with his compatriot. Although the Italian midfielder played in more advanced positions at Newcastle United and previously at AC Milan—where he contributed crucial goals during their Scudetto-winning campaign—he has recently adapted to a deeper midfield role.

That said, Tonali remains capable of operating as a number eight. His physical attributes have improved significantly during his time in England, making him a dependable presence in box-to-box duties as well. For the Azzurri, he has also showcased his versatility by playing higher up the pitch and contributing goals in key moments.

Overall, Tonali’s arrival would enhance the technical quality of Manchester United’s midfield. His ability to retain possession, receive the ball cleanly, and dictate play is seen as a major asset under manager Michael Carrick.
