As the summer transfer window draws near, Manchester United are acting swiftly to overhaul their squad under head coach Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils have made notable headway in negotiations for Atalanta midfielder Ederson and are now said to be close to securing an agreement with Newcastle United for Sandro Tonali.
Tonali, described by club legend Paul Scholes as ‘better than Rice’, is facing an uncertain future at St James’ Park, only months after being linked with a potential January move to Arsenal.
Manchester United are believed to have identified Tonali as their primary midfield target, even while continuing talks for Atalanta’s Ederson.
After a difficult campaign that saw Eddie Howe’s side miss out on a European berth, Newcastle appear resigned to losing one of their most prized assets.
The Magpies are also under financial pressure to balance their accounts, which could make a major sale unavoidable.
Newcastle have reportedly placed a valuation of around €100m (£86m) on the former AC Milan star, though a package worth approximately £70m plus performance-related add-ons might be enough to finalise the move.
Tonali is recognised as a dynamic deep-lying playmaker, known for his ability to carry the ball forward and deliver precise, cutting passes.
Throughout the 2025/26 season, he has showcased the perfect combination of physical strength and technical assurance required to command a top-level Premier League midfield.
Backing Carrick with a marquee acquisition of this calibre would mark a strong statement of ambition from United’s INEOS-led leadership.
Should United complete the deal, Tonali could emerge as the centrepiece of a rejuvenated midfield built to push the club back into Premier League title contention.
