Everton head coach David Moyes has pledged that his team will give their all against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, as he looks to help his former club West Ham United avoid relegation from the Premier League. A victory for Everton on Sunday could potentially send Spurs down to the Championship, depending on whether West Ham manage to overcome Leeds United in their own decisive fixture.

Relegation tension grips London

Everton are set to travel to north London on Sunday to take on 17th-placed Tottenham, who currently sit just two points clear of West Ham in the relegation zone. Tottenham only need a draw to guarantee their survival, but their inconsistencies throughout the season leave them vulnerable against an Everton side eager to secure a top-half finish. The dramatic final day will also see West Ham welcome Leeds United to the London Stadium in another must-win battle for survival.

Moyes focused on professionalism but hopes for West Ham’s safety

The Everton boss has been candid about his affection for West Ham, saying he would be delighted to see them remain in the top flight. However, he emphasised that his primary responsibility lies with Everton. Speaking ahead of the crucial clash, Moyes stated: “I would love to keep West Ham in the league if I can. But it’s more important that I get Everton a top-half finish and we try to get a few more million pounds because of our league place which is so important. Sometimes when you’re in this position, you don’t look at your league position until you’re five or six years on and you look back.”

A lasting bond with the Hammers

The 63-year-old Scottish manager continues to share a strong emotional connection with West Ham, having led them in two different spells between November 2017 and June 2024. His second tenure was particularly memorable, as he guided the club to their first European title in decades by winning the UEFA Europa Conference League after a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in Prague on June 7, 2023. Despite that success, Moyes’ immediate concern is ensuring Everton finish the season positively, even as they struggle through a six-match winless run.

Final hurdle of the season

Everton face a challenging record to overcome, having secured just one win in their last sixteen Premier League away games against Tottenham. Meanwhile, Tottenham are desperate to avoid a repeat of last year’s final-day 4-1 defeat to Brighton. Once the Premier League season concludes, attention will shift to the international stage, as preparations begin for the upcoming World Cup.
