New Modus Operandi
According to police officials, cybercriminals have adopted a new modus operandi by circulating malicious links across various social media and messaging platforms. The scam involves sending a link under the guise of the "Cockroach Janta Party." Once a victim clicks on the link, their mobile device is compromised, granting hackers access to sensitive banking details and leading to the immediate withdrawal of funds.
Police Warn Public
Warning the public against such digital traps, Amarinder Singh, a police official in Ludhiana, stated that cyber thugs are becoming increasingly innovative in their tactics to lure people. The Ludhiana Police has also released a special awareness video on social media platforms to educate residents. The video demonstrates how a single click out of curiosity or negligence can lead to a major financial loss.
Police officer Amarinder Singh, in a video message, said, "Cockroach Janta Party, which is going viral very fast on social media, and people across the country are quite excited about it. At the same time, scammers are also taking advantage of this and are sending you a link on WhatsApp, which states: 'To join the Cockroach Janta Party, click on the link given below. This link is a phishing link. As soon as you click on this link, your phone will be hacked instantly, and all your banking details will be transferred to the scammers. They can then take out loans in your name or withdraw money from your bank account. Do not get emotional and click on any such link that could send your banking details to scammers. If you still fall victim to any such fraud, immediately dial the cyber helpline number 1930."
The police have requested citizens to report any such suspicious activity or fraudulent links via the national cybercrime helpline. (ANI)
