Manchester United are close to completing their first major signing of the summer, having made a major breakthrough in talks for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. The Brazilian is reportedly set to join Old Trafford in a transfer worth more than £43 million, signalling a strong start to the transfer window for the Red Devils.
Red Devils nearing £43m agreement
After several transfer windows of speculation, United have stepped up their pursuit of Ederson. Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport indicate that the final fee will exceed €50 million (£43m). The 26-year-old has developed into one of Serie A’s most dependable midfielders, and a move to the Premier League now appears imminent.
According to journalist Michele Criscitiello, the deal is “almost closed” and includes a €48m (£41m) base payment plus additional performance-related bonuses. For Atalanta, the financial offer is too substantial to reject, particularly after missing out on Champions League qualification and settling for a place in next season’s Conference League. The incoming funds will make this transfer the fifth-largest in Atalanta’s history, following Rasmus Hojlund’s move to Manchester United in 2023.
Atalanta boss confirms active negotiations
Rumours intensified on Friday night when Ederson was left out of Atalanta’s starting line-up for their final Serie A encounter against Fiorentina. Watching from the bench, the midfielder’s absence sparked further speculation that the club was protecting him from injury ahead of a potential transfer. The coaching staff later confirmed this reasoning after the match.
Speaking to the press, Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino explained: “Ederson didn’t play today because there’s a concrete negotiation with a top club.” Although Palladino did not specifically name Manchester United, multiple reports suggest that Carrington is expected to be Ederson’s next destination as both clubs finalise the paperwork.
First signing under Carrick’s full-time leadership?
If completed, Ederson’s arrival would represent a significant step for Michael Carrick, who was recently appointed as Manchester United’s permanent manager. The English coach, who successfully guided the team to Champions League qualification during his interim tenure, is now shaping the squad according to his footballing philosophy. Ederson’s intensity, defensive discipline, and energy align perfectly with the tactical vision Carrick has instilled since taking charge in January.
Atalanta’s midfield engine departs
Ederson has been central to Atalanta’s midfield setup, making 41 appearances this season while scoring three goals and assisting twice. Renowned for his tireless work ethic and sharp defensive awareness, he has earned widespread praise across Italy. Former Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini once lauded his strengths, saying: “His great strong point? The recoveries, he holds his own against anyone.” With Champions League football secured, Manchester United are wasting no time in strengthening Carrick’s squad to challenge for top honours next season.
