2026 may turn out to be another record year for Ford — at least as far as product recalls go. The company made headlines in 2025 after it earned the dubious distinction of issuing the most recalls ever by an automaker (153 in all, affecting 13 million vehicles), beating the previous record holder, General Motors. This year, the company had already amassed a total of 19 separate product recalls involving 7 million vehicles as of March of 2026.
In the two months since then, the number of recall-affected Ford vehicles has surged to more than 9 million, spread across 35 separate recalls. The latest addition to the list of Ford’s 2026 product recall saga is the Ford Bronco — specifically the 2021-22 model of the vehicle. According to NHTSA documents, around 16,200 Ford Bronco SUVs left the factory with a faulty hardtop roof panel that can detach from the vehicle.
The affected panels are Molded-In-Color (MIC) hardtop roof panels that are fitted onto the 3-door and 5-door variants of the 2021-2022 Ford Bronco. The affected panels were manufactured improperly, making their external skin is susceptible to cracking after prolonged exposure to the elements. This cracking could eventually lead to some sections of the outer roof panel separating and coming off. If this detachment happens during a high-speed cruise on a freeway, it could potentially result in an accident.
Ford Bronco faulty roof recall: What to do if your vehicle is affected
Most of the affected vehicles (15,045) were manufactured in 2021, with 1,155 from 2022. While there are no reported cases of serious incidents caused by these faulty roofs, Ford confirmed that there were 25 warranty claims, two field reports, and two customer complaints centered around this problem recorded between December 21, 2021, and December 15, 2025.
If you are among the owners of the affected Ford Broncos, you don’t need to do anything yet. Ford dealers were apprised about the recall starting May 12, 2026. Owners of affected vehicles can expect to be notified by mail near the end of the month.
It will be a while before the actual recall process — which will involve the replacement of the faulty part — actually begins. As per current plans, Ford expects its dealers notify owners of affected vehicles what the remedy will be starting November 5, 2026. If you think your Ford Bronco is possibly affected by this roof- issue, you can search for the same using your vehicle’s VIN on Ford’s recall portal.
