Due to continuously rising temperatures and no respite even at night, cases of heat stress are increasing rapidly. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning saying that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions may persist in many parts of north-west, central, eastern and peninsular India till May 28.
Banda tops the hottest cities of the country-
According to the temperatures recorded between Thursday and Friday, the situation remained very serious in many cities of the country. Banda (Uttar Pradesh) was the hottest city at 48.2°C, followed by Khajuraho (48.0°C), Brahmpuri (47.2°C), Wardha (47.1°C), Najafgarh (47.0°C), Rohtak (46.9°C), Bathinda (46.6°C), Nagpur (46.5°C), Sriganganagar (46.2°C) and Prayagraj. (46.0°C).
Danger of heatwave in many states till May 28-
According to IMD, severe heatwave conditions may persist in eastern Uttar Pradesh and eastern Madhya Pradesh from May 22 to 28. The effect of heat wave is likely to continue for the next few days in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi also. The heat wave is extremely intense in Rajasthan and a severe heatwave alert has been issued in Western Rajasthan from 24 to 28 May.
Apart from this, the effect of heat wave can also be seen on different days in Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and some Himalayan regions.
Hot nights are increasing the problem-
The Meteorological Department has warned of ‘warm nights’ in Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha and Telangana. According to experts, this situation is more dangerous because due to the temperature not decreasing at night, the body does not get relief and heat stress increases.
Weather changed in Delhi-NCR-
The weather has taken a sudden turn in Delhi-NCR also. IMD has issued an orange alert and predicted strong thunderstorm, lightning and light rain in the next few hours. Winds can blow at a speed of 60 to 80 km per hour in many areas and the weather is expected to change rapidly after the dust storm.
UP most affected, red alert in 10 districts-
The effect of extreme heat is being seen most in Uttar Pradesh. Banda was the hottest city in the country, while Prayagraj and Varanasi also recorded temperatures above 45°C. Red alert has been issued in 10 districts of the state. Banda administration has also tried to provide relief to the people by shutting down the traffic signals in the afternoon.
Heat wave continues to wreak havoc in many states-
The effect of hot winds continues in Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. The mercury has crossed 45°C in Rohtak and Faridabad of Haryana. Orange alert has been issued in Gurugram from 24 to 27 May.
Situation is serious in Central and Eastern India also-
Continuous heatwave situation continues in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh. Whereas in Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, the heat along with humidity has increased the problem further.
Impact in South and hilly states also-
There is also a possibility of heat wave in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Telangana of South India. At the same time, abnormal heat is also being recorded in hilly states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Experts’ warning-
Climate experts say that the intensity and duration of heatwaves in India is continuously increasing, the main reason for which is climate change. Prolonged exposure to such heat increases the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The administration has appealed to the people to avoid going out in the afternoon, drink enough water and remain alert.
