Turtles are one of the most ancient creatures found on earth. According to scientists, their ancestors came into existence on Earth about 36 crore years ago. Even when 90 percent of life on Earth disappeared due to some major natural change, turtles managed to survive. Their specialty is that they are capable of living both on land and in water, so that they can survive even in the changing environment.

Turtles famous for their long life

Turtles are also known for their long lifespan. Their lifespan varies by species, but most turtles live a long time. Pet turtles can live from 10 to 80 years, while large sea turtles can live to be over 100 years old. This is why the turtle is considered a symbol of longevity and patience.

Features to reproduction and life

The life cycle of turtles is also very interesting. To lay eggs, the female turtle comes out of the sea to the sandy land and makes a pit there and lays the eggs. After this, small turtles move towards other places instead of their birth place, which helps in their safety and development.

Turtles’ existence in danger

Despite being robust creatures in history, many species of turtles are endangered today. About six out of seven species are on the verge of extinction due to human activities. Fishing nets, poaching and egg trade have seriously threatened their existence.

Giant tortoises and their declining numbers

Giant tortoises in the world are found mainly on the Galapagos Islands and the Aldabra Islands of the Indian Ocean. In the 16th century their number was around 2.5 lakh, but due to hunting it came down to only three thousand by the 1970s. Now their numbers are gradually increasing due to conservation efforts.

Turtle Day and conservation message

World Turtle Day is celebrated every year on 23 May. Its aim is to make people aware of the conservation of turtles and their habitat. Since the year 2000, this day is being organized by the American Tortoise Rescue Organization, which is continuously working for the conservation of turtles.

Unique lifestyle of turtles

Sea turtles, also known as green turtles, depend on natural balance for food and survival even while living in the ocean. Whereas terrestrial turtles go underground during cold weather and their armor is their biggest protection. Be it water or land, the life of turtles is a wonderful example of the balance of nature.
