Fresh Contract Could Block Summer Transfer: FC Bayern Encounter Roadblock in Pursuit of Josko Gvardiol

Manchester City are reportedly moving to fend off any potential approach from Bayern Munich for defender Josko Gvardiol by preparing a new contract offer for the Croatian star.

As per the German outlet Bild’s podcast 'Bayern Insider', the City hierarchy has already presented Gvardiol with a fresh contract proposal, signalling their intent to secure his long-term future at the club.

The proposed extension would keep the Croatian international at the Premier League side until the conclusion of the 2030/31 season, lengthening his current agreement which runs until June 2028.

Earlier, Sport1 had claimed that the versatile defender was contemplating an exit from Manchester, with Bayern Munich seen as his preferred destination. The 24-year-old is reportedly a "big admirer" of the Bavarian giants, and the club had previously shown interest in him before his transfer from RB Leipzig to Manchester City.

Legendary German international Lothar Matthäus went a step further, suggesting that Gvardiol could be Bayern’s prime defensive target for the upcoming transfer window. Matthäus hinted that he had "heard that Bayern have already started making initial enquiries" regarding a potential move.

Bayern may need to spend big to land Gvardiol

Despite their interest, Bayern might find the financial aspect challenging. Reports suggest that Manchester City will demand a transfer fee of at least €75 million for Gvardiol, a sum the German champions are unlikely to meet.

Additionally, Bayern Munich are not currently planning a major overhaul in central defence. With Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah forming a strong partnership, and squad depth including Josip Stanisic, Hiroki Ito, and Min-Jae Kim, the club already have solid options. Even if Ito, who is expected to leave for around €20 million, and Kim were to depart this summer, a move worth €75 million still appears improbable.

Furthermore, Bayern are well-stocked at left-back—Gvardiol’s secondary position—thanks to Alphonso Davies. Although rumours have circulated about the Canadian possibly leaving due to fitness concerns, the club has reportedly identified Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown as his potential successor should a move materialise.

Bayern’s transfer focus lies elsewhere

Heading into the summer transfer window, Bayern Munich are prioritising reinforcements in other areas. The club are looking to sign a new left winger to reduce the workload on Luis Díaz, with Anthony Gordon frequently mentioned as a possible target.

In addition, the Bavarian side is on the lookout for a new full-back and a backup striker to support Harry Kane, following Nicolas Jackson’s loan spell coming to an end.
