Real Madrid have officially confirmed that David Alaba will leave the club at the end of the current season, sparking widespread speculation about his next destination among top-tier European and international clubs.
After spending five years with the Spanish giants, Real Madrid have chosen not to renew the Austrian defender’s expiring contract. The club made the announcement on Friday, stating that the 33-year-old’s future plans are still undecided.
According to reports, several leading clubs have been keeping a close watch on Alaba’s situation in Madrid. ESPN has reported that Manchester United have a strong interest in signing the experienced centre-back, while AC Milan are also evaluating a potential move. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that teams from both the United States and Saudi Arabia are monitoring developments closely.
Injuries have significantly affected Alaba’s time at Real Madrid. Since joining from FC Bayern Munich in 2021, he has helped the team secure two UEFA Champions League titles and two La Liga championships, among other honours. However, his tenure in the Spanish capital has been repeatedly interrupted by serious fitness issues. In late 2023, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for over a year, followed by a meniscus tear that sidelined him for much of the summer of 2025. Consequently, Alaba managed to appear in only 15 competitive matches for Real Madrid this season.
In an official statement, the club expressed its appreciation, saying they wished to extend their “gratitude and affection for a player who contributed to one of the most successful eras in our history.” Club president Florentino Pérez added: “Real Madrid will always be his home.”
To honour his contributions, Real Madrid will hold a farewell ceremony for Alaba at the Santiago Bernabéu before their final home fixture of the season against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday. Following the event, Alaba will join the Austrian national team as captain for the upcoming World Cup, which will take place in the USA, Mexico, and Canada from 11 June to 19 July.
