Rot-Weiss Essen have taken a major step toward promotion to the 2. Bundesliga with a memorable victory and an equally dramatic fan spectacle that captured nationwide attention.
The club from Essen opened their promotion play-off campaign in style, defeating Greuther Fürth 1-0 (0-0) in the first leg at home. The result puts them in a strong position ahead of the decisive return fixture in Fürth on Tuesday.
The match’s defining moment came in the 62nd minute when Torben Müsel delivered a stunning free-kick that soared into the top corner, sending the home crowd at Hafenstraße into delirium. The goal leaves Fürth under intense pressure as they now battle to avoid relegation to the third tier for the first time since 1997.
Off the pitch, Rot-Weiss Essen supporters staged a remarkable pre-match display. The club’s Ultras unveiled a goalpost—believed to have been taken from MSV Duisburg—in their section of the stands. Alongside the post were two cheeky banners that read, “MSV: The dream is over” and “Your post in our boot.”
The reference was clear: that very same post had been struck by MSV player Rasim Bulic, who missed a golden chance in stoppage time against Viktoria Köln on the final day of the league season. His miss denied Duisburg promotion and paved the way for Essen to seal their play-off spot.
Had Bulic scored, MSV Duisburg would have secured promotion outright. Instead, they were left with a draw, while Rot-Weiss Essen netted a last-minute winner against Ulm to keep their hopes alive.
This victory now brings Essen within touching distance of returning to Germany’s second division after spending 14 years outside the professional ranks. Their journey back has been long and difficult, marked by relegation, financial turmoil, and years of frustration.
Essen’s resurgence began in 2022, when they finally earned promotion back to the 3. Liga—ending a 14-year absence from professional competition. The 1955 German champions have since rebuilt momentum, and this play-off campaign marks their closest approach yet to a return to the 2. Bundesliga.
The match itself was tight and physical. Fürth’s Jannik Dehm fired an early warning in the 16th minute, rattling the crossbar and reminding the home side of the visitors’ quality. However, that effort turned out to be one of the few clear chances in an otherwise tense and scrappy encounter.
Fürth, who had only secured 16th place in the second division on the final matchday with a 3-0 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf, struggled to create meaningful opportunities. Essen, meanwhile, grew stronger as the match progressed. Kaito Mizuta came close in the 58th minute before Müsel’s moment of brilliance sealed a deserved victory that perfectly captured the determination and spirit of a club dreaming of long-awaited promotion.
