The global artificial intelligence race is no longer just about chatbots and AI models — it is now rapidly becoming a battle over the chips powering them. In the latest sign of that shift, AI startup Anthropic is reportedly in early discussions to rent servers powered by custom AI chips designed by Microsoft.
If the talks materialize into a formal partnership, it could become a major milestone for Microsoft’s ambitions to compete directly with AI chip leader NVIDIA while also strengthening its growing relationship with Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of AI models.

Microsoft Wants a Bigger Role in the AI Hardware Race
For years, Nvidia has dominated the AI chip industry with its powerful GPUs, which are used to train and run large AI models from companies like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic. But the explosion in AI demand has also created two major problems: soaring costs and limited chip supply.
That has opened the door for tech giants to build their own alternatives.
Microsoft has been investing heavily in custom AI hardware to reduce its dependence on Nvidia. Earlier this year, the company unveiled the second generation of its in-house AI accelerator chip called “Maia 200.”
The chip was built using advanced 3-nanometer manufacturing technology from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Companycommonly known as TSMC. Microsoft has also reportedly packed the chip with large amounts of SRAM memory, which helps AI systems respond faster to huge volumes of chatbot queries.
This design focus is particularly important as companies increasingly deploy AI assistants and enterprise chatbots that must serve millions of users simultaneously.
Why Anthropic Matters So Much
Landing Anthropic as a customer would be a massive validation for Microsoft’s AI chip strategy.
Anthropic has quickly emerged as one of the most influential AI startups in the world. Its Claude models compete directly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, while the company itself has attracted major backing from both Amazon and Google.
What makes Anthropic particularly valuable is its growing appetite for computing power. Training and serving advanced AI models requires enormous infrastructure, and companies are increasingly searching for alternatives to Nvidia’s expensive chips.
That trend has already benefited Amazon and Google, both of which developed their own custom AI chips before eventually renting that infrastructure to external AI startups.
Microsoft now appears eager to follow the same path.
Microsoft and Anthropic Are Growing Closer
The discussions also reflect Microsoft’s evolving AI strategy.
While Microsoft remains a major partner and investor in OpenAIthe relationship between the two companies has become more complex as OpenAI expands aggressively into enterprise products and infrastructure.
At the same time, Microsoft has been quietly deepening its relationship with Anthropic. The company has integrated Anthropic’s models into several offerings, including parts of its Copilot ecosystem.
This diversification helps Microsoft avoid overreliance on a single AI partner while also positioning Azure as a broader platform for multiple AI model providers.
If Anthropic begins using Microsoft-powered AI servers at scale, it could significantly boost Azure’s credibility in the increasingly competitive cloud AI market.

The bigger story here is the rapidly escalating battle to control AI infrastructure.
AI companies are no longer competing solely on software innovation. The ability to access cheaper, faster, and more efficient computing power is becoming just as important as building smarter models.
