Gourav, a third-year MBBS student from J&K’s Reasi district, found dead under mysterious circumstances in Russiasocial media

Gourav Singh, a promising student from Jammu and Kashmir’s remote and underdeveloped Reasi district, who had gone to Russia with the dream of becoming a doctor, will never return home. His body was recovered nearly five months after he mysteriously went missing, sending shockwaves through his family and village. The body arrived in Delhi on Friday, after which his relatives travelled to Haridwar and performed his last rites.

Gourav Singh, a 21-year-old resident of Matlot village in the Mahore area of Reasi district and the son of Rashpal Singh, was pursuing an MBBS degree in Russia. He was studying at a medical university along with his younger sister and had already completed four years of his medical education. His family had hoped that he would return home as a doctor after completing his studies, but fate had other plans.

Quoting the roommates of Gourav, her sister said that he disappeared from his hostel under mysterious circumstances on December 10, 2025.

Shockingly Gourav left his mobile phone, identity card, and wallet in his hostel room and took only his bank card with him. During the investigation, police used the bank card to trace some of his last known movements and transactions.

CCTV Footage Examined, Search Operation Launched

Investigators found that after leaving the hostel, Gourav travelled by bus and purchased some items from a local shop. Based on these leads, the police examined CCTV footage and launched an extensive search operation. However, despite sustained efforts, no trace of him was found for over five months.

The search was further complicated by harsh winter conditions. A river in the area where Gourav was believed to have gone was frozen due to severe cold, making rescue and recovery operations extremely difficult.

A few days ago, after temperatures rose and the ice melted, authorities recovered Gourav’s body from the river. Following a medical examination and completion of the required legal formalities, the body was flown to Delhi and arrived at the airport on Friday morning.

Family members received the body in Delhi and later travelled to Haridwar, where the last rites were performed according to Hindu traditions.

As of now, no official statement has been issued regarding the exact cause of Gourav Singh’s death. The family remains devastated by the tragic loss of their son.

Gourav and his younger sister were studying MBBS at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod, Russia. According to family members, he had been pursuing his medical studies in Russia for the past several years and had never reported any major problems or concerns.

The family learnt about his disappearance the day after he went missing when Gaurav’s sister informed them that he could not be located. She had been told by Gaurav’s roommate that they had searched for him but were unable to find any trace of him.

The mysterious disappearance and subsequent recovery of Gourav’s body after nearly five months have left his family, friends, and the residents of his native village in deep mourning.
