Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has experienced a season full of ups and downs.
It was quite apparent that Mainoo was not among Ruben Amorim’s preferred players during his tenure at Old Trafford.
The young talent struggled for minutes under Amorim, making just one start — against Grimsby Town in the League Cup. However, everything changed dramatically after Amorim’s dismissal in January.
Initially brought back into the fold by caretaker boss Darren Fletcher, and later firmly reinstated by Michael Carrick, Mainoo re-established himself in the heart of United’s midfield. Partnering with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, he has delivered consistently dominant performances throughout 2026.
One of Mainoo’s standout moments came earlier this month when he netted the winning goal against Liverpool in front of an ecstatic Stretford End crowd.
His impressive displays earned him a recall to the England national team for the March internationals.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, “understand Kobbie Mainoo is expected to make Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.”
His Manchester United teammate Marcus Rashford, who spent the previous season on loan with FC Barcelona, is also anticipated to be part of the squad.
However, there were some surprises, as Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire were reportedly left out of the selection.
Mainoo had a crucial role in England’s Euro 2024 campaign, starting in the final clash against Spain.
Across the current season, the midfielder has featured in 29 matches, scoring once and providing three assists.
His excellent contributions have been recognised with a new long-term contract at Manchester United, the club he has supported since childhood.
To date, Mainoo has represented England 12 times, most notably during the last European Championship.
The young midfielder will aim to close out the Premier League season strongly when Manchester United face Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon, before turning his attention to his World Cup ambitions.
