Purushottam Maas 2026: The importance of Adhikamas has been mentioned in the scriptures of Sanatan Dharma. Adhikamas is also called Malamas. This month is also called Purushottam month. Because this month has been dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Srihari is also a name Purushottam. Malmas, which started from 17th May, will continue till 15th June. Malmas comes every third year. The Hindu calendar is based on the movement of the Sun and the Moon. There are 365 days in a solar year and about 354 days in a lunar year.
In this way there is a difference of 11 days every year between the solar and lunar years. In three years this difference becomes 33 days. To bridge this gap, Adhikamas or rather Malamas takes place. Worship of Lord Vishnu in Malmas is considered very fruitful. It is said in the Puranas that the results of chanting, penance, charity, fasting and worship done in this month are more than on normal days. This month is very dear to Lord Vishnu, so why are marriages, house warming, mundan and other auspicious events not done in it? Let us know about this in detail.
Malamas and Kshayamas
Malamas is divided into two main parts. The first is Adhikamas and the second is Kshayamas. Adhikamas is considered to be a situation in which there is not even a single Sankranti in the entire lunar month. This is called the most common Malamas. Whereas Kshayamaas is considered very rare. There are two Sankrantis in the same month. It is said in the religious scriptures that Kshayamaas falls approximately once in 141 years, hence it is more special.
Why are auspicious works not done in Malmas?
The time of Malmas has been prescribed in the scriptures for spiritual practice. During this time it is advised to give up material pleasures. This is the reason why marriage, tonsure and other auspicious works are not considered auspicious during this period. In this month, a person should stay away from worldly celebrations and do devotion to God and introspection.
During this time, a person should do things that purify his mind and life. At this time, one gets double the virtue by worshiping, reciting Geeta and Puranas, chanting mantras, doing charity, fasting, meditating and helping the needy.
