Chennai Super Kings fans have seen only a few bad seasons in IPL. But IPL 2026 season has been one of the worst seasons for him. There is not just one reason but many. But there were two most important reasons for this - first, the performance of the team in this season which could not reach the playoffs and second, MS Dhoni did not play any match in the entire season. Now there is an even bigger concern whether Dhoni will return to play in the next season? The answer to this was given by Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and what he said was quite interesting.
In its last match of IPL 2026, Chennai had to face a crushing defeat by 89 runs at the hands of Gujarat Titans. This defeat was the true picture of this season of Chennai. After losing many matches in the beginning of this season, Chennai made a strong comeback and raised hopes but ultimately it could not happen. With the defeat against Gujarat, Chennai was officially out of the playoffs and suffered this failure for the third consecutive season.
After the end of the match, the broadcaster asked questions and answers to captain Ruturaj Gaikwad before the presentation ceremony. Obviously there was a question regarding Dhoni whether he would return in the next IPL? Apparently Gaikwad did not make any promises on this but said that he is happy with the players who are in the team. The CSK captain said, "You and I will know next year (whether Dhoni will play or not). We missed him a lot. He can come in the last overs and change the game just by staying in the crease. Can't say anything about the next season but we are happy with the players we have."
Dhoni got injured just 2 days before the start of this season, from which it took him a long time to recover. Due to this, he did not come to the field with the team on the match day in any of the initial matches. After this his thumb got injured. Although Dhoni had definitely reached the team's last match at the home ground in Chennai, but he could not play in it too and then he returned to his home in Ranchi before the last match of the season against Gujarat.
