Harry Maguire has reportedly been excluded from England’s World Cup squad, according to updates released on Thursday afternoon.
The Manchester United centre-back, who has been a regular presence in the national side for nearly ten years, will not feature in Thomas Tuchel’s lineup heading to the United States early next month.
At 33, Maguire is said to be both surprised and deeply disappointed by Tuchel’s choice to leave him out. The former Chelsea manager is expected to officially announce his 26-man squad for the tournament on Friday morning.
Responding to the unexpected development, Maguire stated on X: “I was confident that I could make a significant contribution for my country this summer after the season I’ve had.”
He further added, “I’m truly shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the lads all the very best.”
Although Maguire made 24 appearances for Manchester United this season, the ex-Red Devils skipper will not be part of the squad travelling to North America.
Maguire had also missed England’s previous major tournament, Euro 2024, due to injury.
