Michael Carrick could soon be strengthened in a crucial area of his squad, as Manchester United prepare for life after Casemiro.

Casemiro is expected to make his final appearance for Manchester United on Sunday, with the club already lining up two possible replacements for the Brazilian star.

There is a renewed sense of optimism at Old Trafford this summer after Michael Carrick steered the team to an outstanding second half of the campaign, securing a third-place finish and qualification for the Champions League.

The Brazilian midfielder has played a major role in that achievement and departs the club with plenty of admirers, even though he has struggled at times to consistently hit top form during his spell in Manchester.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio, Manchester United have already earmarked two midfield targets to support Carrick and strengthen the team for multiple competitions next season.

The first name on their list is Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, whose future has been under scrutiny following a disappointing season for Eddie Howe’s side overall.

Tonali has also been linked with a potential move to Arsenal this summer, suggesting that there could be competition among Premier League clubs for his signature.

Despite being sidelined for several months due to a betting-related suspension, the Italian midfielder has been one of Newcastle’s most consistent players since joining the club in 2023.

However, Newcastle are likely to demand a significant transfer fee for Tonali, as he still has at least three years remaining on his current contract.

This could prompt Manchester United to explore other options — and Atalanta’s Ederson is understood to be another strong candidate.

The three-cap Brazilian, who missed out on selection for his national squad for the 2026 World Cup, is widely expected to leave Bergamo this summer.

The 26-year-old midfielder has just one year left on his contract with Atalanta and has also attracted interest from Atletico Madrid.

Known for his high-energy style of play, Ederson joined Atalanta from Salernitana in 2022 and has since established himself as a dynamic presence in midfield.
