New Delhi. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has played many memorable and experimental characters in his career, but there was one film of his in which he played not one but three roles. This film was ‘Mahan’, released in the year 1983, which may be considered an interesting concept film today, but at the time of release it could not live up to the expectations at the box office and proved to be a flop.

The special thing about this film was that Amitabh Bachchan played the role of a father and two sons simultaneously. He played three different roles like Rana Ranveer, Guru and Inspector Shankar, which gives a unique twist to the story. The different nature and style of each character tries to give a new experience to the audience, but despite this the film was not successful in drawing the audience to the theatre.

The story of ‘Mahan’ was presented as an action-thriller family drama, directed by S. Ramanathan, while its screenplay was written by famous writer Kader Khan. Not only Amitabh Bachchan but many big stars of that era were also seen in the film, which included names like Zeenat Aman, Ashok Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Parveen Babi, Amjad Khan, Aruna Irani and Shakti Kapoor. Despite such a big star cast, the film could not get the expected success at the box office.

According to reports, the budget of the film was around Rs 2.50 crore, while it earned around Rs 4.1 crore from India and overseas combined. Although it earned money, it performed poorly compared to the cost and expectations, due to which it was classified as a flop.

Interestingly, Jeetendra was the first choice for this film. It is said that when Jeetendra was not available due to some reason, then on his request this film went to Amitabh Bachchan and he accepted this challenging double rather than triple role.

In today’s time, ‘Mahan’ is seen as an experimental film, in which a different form of Amitabh Bachchan’s acting ability can be seen. The IMDb rating of the film is said to be around 6 and it can still be seen on OTT platforms.

Although this film could not be successful at the box office, but this film reminds of the period in Amitabh Bachchan’s career when he was constantly experimenting with new and challenging characters and creating a distinct identity in the industry with his acting.
