Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered a re-investigation into the case of alleged destruction of evidence to the incident of rape and murder of a female doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the year 2024. Considering the seriousness of this case, the court has directed to constitute a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the supervision of Joint Director (Eastern Region) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This team will investigate the entire incident in detail.
What did the court say?
Considering the allegations made by the victim’s family as serious, the division bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh ordered the SIT to investigate every aspect impartially. The court said that the investigation should find out whether any attempt was made to tamper with the evidence or destroy it. Also, the court has directed the SIT to present its detailed report in the High Court by June 25.
The High Court also ordered the CBI to re-review the entire incident from the night of the incident till the cremation of the body the next day. The court believes that there is a need to understand many aspects of the case in more depth, so that the truth can come out.
During this time, the central agency has been given the right to interrogate any person considered necessary for the investigation. The court made it clear that the investigation should be completely fair and transparent, so that the victim’s family can get justice.
Widespread anger across the country
It is noteworthy that after this matter came to light, there was widespread anger across the country. Doctors and medical students had also protested at many places regarding security arrangements. This incident had raised serious questions on the safety of women doctors working in hospitals. Now after the new order of the court, it is expected that every aspect of the case will be investigated in depth and strict action will be ensured against the culprits.
