Inside the Long-Running Rift Between Mohamed Salah and Jamie Carragher

Liverpool’s Egyptian star, Mohamed Salah, has long been a target of Jamie Carragher’s public criticism.

Most recently, Salah’s Instagram post — perceived as a subtle jab at under-pressure manager Arne Slot — sparked yet another outburst from Carragher on live television.

The history of tension between Salah and Carragher is well-documented, largely fuelled by the former Liverpool defender’s repeated digs at the forward. However, Salah has occasionally managed to deliver his own sharp responses over the years.

The latest chapter unfolded on Sky Sports last night when Carragher described Salah’s post as “selfish” and claimed he had warned his colleagues that the Egyptian forward would “drop another bomb.”

Continuing his criticism, the 48-year-old pundit remarked, “Mo Salah is more like Salah FC than Liverpool FC. The reason I’ve been harsh on him is because he puts himself ahead of the football club.”

He went on to compare Salah’s behaviour after being benched in December to how Liverpool legends Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard handled similar situations late in their careers.

“Did Dalglish ever publicly attack Joe Fagan? No, he didn’t. Did Steven Gerrard criticise Brendan Rodgers on his way out? No, he didn’t. I still don’t recall Salah apologising for his outburst at Leeds,” Carragher added.

However, Salah’s teammate Curtis Jones later confirmed that the Egyptian had apologised privately to the squad after that incident. Despite this, Carragher has continued to focus on what he sees as the negative aspects of Salah’s personality and professionalism.

Back in 2024, Carragher also questioned Salah’s motives when the forward publicly pushed for a contract renewal just days before key matches against Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Speaking on Sky Sports at the time, Carragher said, “If Salah keeps putting statements out or his agent keeps posting cryptic messages, that’s selfish. It’s about themselves, not the football club.”

Salah quickly fired back on X (formerly Twitter), posting, “I’m starting to think you’re obsessed with me,” before scoring and assisting in a 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester City days later.

Following that game, where Salah was named Man of the Match, Virgil van Dijk jokingly remarked that he was surprised Carragher didn’t give the award to him, while handing Salah the trophy. The Egyptian quipped, “He wouldn’t give it to me!” prompting Carragher to respond on X that he “would’ve given it to VVD, to be fair.”

Their rivalry deepened in December 2025 when Salah, repeatedly benched under Arne Slot, delivered a fiery interview accusing Liverpool of failing to shield him from media criticism.

In response, Carragher declared, “I’ll call out Mo Salah when he tries to throw my club under the bus and only thinks about himself. I absolutely will.” He went on to describe Salah’s comments as a “disgrace” and accused him of orchestrating them “to cause maximum damage.”

During the 2018/19 season, Carragher had already shown a clear preference for Sadio Mane over Salah during the Reds’ title battle with Manchester City. On Monday Night Football, he stated, “Mane is the one who brought Liverpool back. He was Klopp’s first major signing. It’s not just about scoring at the end — it’s about the importance of the goals. He’s the best wide player Liverpool have had in 30 years, since John Barnes... I’d rather lose Salah than Mane.”

These comments came during Salah’s first goal drought for Liverpool, following a record-breaking 32-goal Premier League campaign. At that time, Salah had been involved in 70 league goals in 69 matches, compared to Mane’s 36 contributions in 58 games.

By the 2024/25 season, as Liverpool battled for the Premier League crown and Salah edged closer to a third PFA Players’ Player of the Year title, Carragher publicly admitted on Sky Sports that Salah might be Liverpool’s greatest-ever player.

Salah validated that claim by winning the PFA POTY, Golden Boot, Playmaker Award, and the Premier League title. However, the following year, Carragher ranked Salah only sixth among Liverpool legends during a club interview — a move that drew heavy backlash from fans on X, especially since it came shortly after Salah’s announced departure from Anfield.

When questioned about his decision, Carragher explained on X: “Leadership! First bad season for him and the club [in 2025/26] and I think he could have handled it better.” In compiling his rankings, Carragher placed Graeme Souness above Salah, citing off-field leadership as a key factor — despite Souness’s infamous interview with The Sun on the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

Regardless of how their feud ultimately ends, most Liverpool supporters will likely be relieved to see the back of it as Salah prepares to leave Anfield. The Egyptian is set to don Liverpool’s red shirt one final time against Brentford on Sunday, as Arne Slot’s men aim to secure Champions League qualification.
