The Testaments marks the next instalment of the compelling Handmaid's Tale saga, adapted from the novels by celebrated Canadian author Margaret Atwood.

It made its debut on Disney+ in the UK this past April and has already amassed a substantial following, including dedicated viewers who watched the concluding season of the flagship series last year.

Set within the grim dystopian realm of Gilead, the series centres on a group of young women attending a preparatory school that moulds them into ideal wives for powerful men in a society where women are kept oppressed.

While most students resign themselves to their status as second-class citizens, the appearance of defiant newcomer Daisy (played by Lucy Halliday) throws the life of Agnes MacKenzie (Chase Infiniti) into turmoil - the daughter of resistance leader June Osbourne (Elisabeth Moss), reports the Mirror.

With just one episode of the first season remaining, due to air on Wednesday, 27th May, fans have been treated to an exciting update regarding the show's future.

Viewers were delighted this Wednesday (20th May) as the release of episode nine, Marat Sade, was swiftly followed by confirmation that The Testaments has been commissioned for a second season.

US streaming platform Hulu announced the news after the first season accumulated an impressive 45 million hours viewed.

The series has also garnered an impressive 88 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and enjoyed a substantial 20 per cent viewership increase for episode four following its three-part premiere on Wednesday, 8th April.

Actress Ann Dowd has earned widespread acclaim for her captivating return as the multifaceted antagonist Aunt Lydia, while the series also features Mabel Li, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Birva Pandya, and Kira Guloien.

Former Handmaid's Tale lead Moss also made a comeback as June for guest appearances in episodes one and three.

Viewers were thrilled upon learning the series will carry on ahead of next week's eagerly awaited season finale. One fan exclaimed on X: "BLESSED BE THE FRUIT. THANK YOU! We got another season with our favourite plums!! Everyone cheered."

"It has definitely exceeded my expectations for a spin off," someone else said.

And a final fan wrote: "Blessed be the fruit. Thank you for this announcement, we've been waiting so long. Our girls' journey continues, excited for what's to come in season 2. Please don't delay the release."

Be sure to catch up on this compelling continuation of The Handmaid's Tale before season two of The Testaments begins, which is anticipated to enter production later this year.

The Testaments is available to stream on Disney+.
