A major outdoor brand is set to shut a branch in a UK city. Trespass, which has 230 stores across Britain, is closing its shop in the Scottish city of Inverness at Eastgate Shopping Centre. The date of the reported planned closure is not known, but signs have appeared, advising customers that the branch will soon be no more. Trespass sells high-end outdoor kit, such as skiwear, waterproof jackets, fleeces, walking boots and camping gear.

The company was founded in Glasgow as Jacobs & Turner Ltd. in 1938. It was renamed in 1984, and opened its first retail outlets in the 1990s. The name went global in 2014, opening stores in Europe - in the Netherlands, Poland, France, Germany and Austria. In 2023, its first Canadian shop opened its doors. However, in recent years the company, like many, has struggled as a result of declining footfall and tricky trading conditions. By 2024, several Trespass stores had closed.

"Closing down," signage reads at the Inverness store, according to the Press and Journal. "Everything must go."

High Streets UK has highlighted that businesses are "managing rising wage, rent and utility costs. Further fixed tax pressure may weaken investment and hiring, particularly in sectors that rely on visitor spending."

The pressure group added that the government is to proceed with a new business rates structure from 2026, with lower multipliers for properties below £500,000 rateable value funded in part by a higher multiplier applied to the largest premises.

"The uplift now appears to be around 2.8p, rather than the 10p increase previously modelled - but even at this reduced level, it still represents a significant long-term cost for large operators at a time when trading conditions are already challenging," it wrote.

In February, YouGov reported that just 35% of Brits with a local high street would say it is in a good state.

Meanwhile, 43% felt their local high street is in a bad way, and a further 21% feel their high street is neither in a good state nor a bad state.
