Just four days after its launch, the satirical ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ has taken social media by storm, surpassing the Instagram following of India’s ruling party, the BJP.
Created by Abhijit Deepike, the quirky political parody page has rapidly gone viral among young users online. What started as a humorous reaction on social media platform X following remarks made during a Supreme Court hearing has now turned into one of the internet’s biggest talking points.
The controversy began after comments attributed to Chief Justice Surya Kant allegedly compared unemployed youth entering journalism, law and RTI activism to “cockroaches” and “parasites.” Although the Chief Justice later clarified that his remarks had been misrepresented, the issue had already exploded across social media platforms.
Soon after, Abhijit Deepike launched the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ as a satirical response. Within a day, the party’s Instagram account — @cockroachjantaparty — went live and quickly attracted massive attention.
By 11 am on May 21, the account had crossed 11.4 million followers, overtaking the official BJP Instagram handle @bjp4india, which currently has around 8.7 million followers.
Social media users have been highlighting the sharp contrast between the two accounts. While the BJP reportedly built its follower base over several years and more than 18,000 posts, the Cockroach Janata Party crossed the milestone with just 56 posts.
The parody party has also unveiled an AI-generated anthem featuring the line: “We are Cockroach Party, we are children of a burning city.” It has declared a mobile phone as its election symbol and adopted the slogan: “Secular, Socialist, Democratic, Lazy.”
