Residents said the incident has deeply affected the entire neighbourhood because both girls were well known and loved in the area.
Their father, Ramesh, works at a small hair salon located around 500 metres from the family’s rented house.
According to neighbours, the children’s mother died around five years ago, when Lakshmi was only one-and-a-half months old. Since then, Ramesh had been raising both daughters alone while also struggling financially.
Locals said Ramesh usually left home every morning around 9am for work and returned later in the afternoon. During that time, the sisters often played outside in the locality.
Residents said the girls spent time near shops, gravel piles and rooftops because there was no one at home to supervise them regularly.
On the day of the incident, the sisters reportedly entered the broken vehicle while playing nearby and accidentally became trapped inside.
Neighbour Ashok Ahuja said many residents helped the family whenever possible because of their poor financial condition.
“It was difficult for Ramesh to manage the house alone. Sometimes neighbours gave food and other essentials to the children,” he said.
Another resident said the girls were loved by everyone in the neighbourhood.
“After their father left for work, the children mostly looked after themselves. Everyone in the locality cared for them,” the resident said.
