On Wednesday evening, a Flood Advisory was announced for various regions in New York City and northeast New Jersey due to intense thunderstorms that resulted in heavy rainfall and flooding risks, along with disruptions to subway services. The National Weather Service has extended the advisory until 9:30 PM, affecting areas such as Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau County, Hudson County, and Union County.
Meteorologists reported that Doppler radar indicated significant rainfall linked to the thunderstorms, with recorded precipitation ranging from 1 to 2 inches in certain areas. Officials cautioned that while further rainfall may be minimal, it could exacerbate flooding in low-lying regions and areas with inadequate drainage.
Areas likely to face flooding include Jersey City, Jamaica, Elizabeth, Freeport, Long Beach, Valley Stream, Forest Hills, Crown Heights, Rockaway Beach, and locations near Kennedy Airport and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Emergency officials have advised residents to exercise caution throughout the evening.
NYC Emergency Management has urged individuals to stay indoors during thunderstorms and to avoid windows, rooftops, balconies, plumbing, and electrical devices due to the risk of strong winds and lightning. They advised, “Call 911 if you are in immediate danger, trapped by rising water, or witness a life-threatening situation.”
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani also issued a public alert following the National Weather Service's announcement of both a Flood Advisory and Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the city. Additionally, the severe weather led to disruptions in subway services in Queens, with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reporting delays on the E line and partial suspension of the F line due to flooding at a subway station. Transit crews are currently working to clear water from the affected station, but no timeline for the resumption of normal service has been provided.
Authorities continue to remind drivers to avoid flooded roads, reiterating the warning: “Turn around, don’t drown.”
