Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has firmly rejected claims that Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League has led to any decline in his performance for the national team. Following a recent scouting visit to Riyadh, Martinez praised the veteran striker’s enduring determination and fitness as he continues preparations for another World Cup campaign.
Scouting mission in Riyadh
Martinez travelled to Saudi Arabia to watch the 1-1 draw between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal at King Saud University Stadium on Tuesday, May 12. The 52-year-old manager used the trip to assess the performances of Ruben Neves, Joao Felix, and particularly Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite being 41, Ronaldo has delivered an outstanding season, scoring 26 goals and recording three assists, playing a crucial role in keeping Al-Nassr at the top of the Saudi Pro League standings.
Enduring hunger praised
Speaking to the German Press Agency (DPA), Martinez highlighted that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star remains indispensable for Portugal. He stated: "Cristiano still shows a strong desire to win, and I have not seen any evidence that his level has fallen since moving to Saudi Arabia. He is performing at an exceptional level and continues to demonstrate his value to the Portuguese national team. His drive remains alive even after all his achievements, and maintaining that kind of hunger is truly extraordinary."
Responsibility reminder
While acknowledging Ronaldo’s legendary career, Martinez stressed that the forward is still required to meet the same expectations as the rest of the squad. He said: "Past accomplishments alone are not enough to secure a place in the national team. Every player must contribute to the overall success of the side. Although Cristiano is the captain and has achieved historic milestones that highlight his exceptional ability, he carries the same responsibilities as any other member of the team."
Final squad selection
Attention will now turn to Tuesday, May 19, when Martinez will unveil his 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup. If selected, Ronaldo would make history with his sixth appearance at the World Cup finals, having first featured in the tournament in 2006. Portugal are set to begin their North American campaign on June 17 with a match against DR Congo in Houston, kicking off a challenging Group K that also includes Uzbekistan and Colombia.
