Held at the Shoreline Amphitheater in California Google Tech giants Google and Samsung have unveiled their next-generation smart glasses during the I/O 2026 keynote. These smart glasses are part of the ever-growing Android XR ecosystem, designed for extended reality (XR) devices. Both companies have announced two categories of AI-powered glasses, including audio glasses and display glasses. Both these smart glasses are based on Gemini AI. These smart glasses have been designed to make the user comfortable in using the smartphone.

Audio glasses and display smart glasses
According to a blog post shared by Google, there are two categories of intelligent eyewear. The first category includes audio glasses. Which are similar to Ray-Ban Meta glasses and provide voice assistance through in-built speakers. The second category includes smart glasses with displays. which are capable of providing direct contextual visual information to users. Google has said that the audio-focused variant will arrive first this fall. Both giant tech companies have partnered with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker for their initial lineup of smart glasses. Aiming to reduce smartphone usage
These smart glasses are designed to act as a companion device that connects to the smartphone itself. While using these smart glasses, users will get a summary of messaging, calls and notifications without taking the smartphone out of their pocket. Google says that these smart glasses use private over-ear speakers for audio playback, calls and music streaming. It also features real-time translation support, capable of translating conversations by matching the tone and pitch of the original speaker. Users will be able to directly translate text written on menus or street signs with the help of these glasses.
Users will get answers to questions
Users can speak Google or tap on the side of the glasses frame to turn on Gemini in smart glasses. Once activated, this AI assistant can analyze its surroundings, answer questions about objects and places, and even help with daily tasks. A highlighted feature of this is contextual visual understanding.

This means that users can ask Gemini questions about upcoming or nearby restaurants, weather forecasts, parking signs or other topics. Smart glasses provide turn-by-turn navigation directions based on the user’s location and status. In addition, Gemini is able to add stops to routes or recommend nearby restaurants. These smart glasses also support AI-assisted photography. Users can capture photos and videos through voice commands. Google has said that the smart glasses will support both Android and iOS devices.
