Neymar has secured a spot in Brazil’s World Cup squad, with head coach Carlo Ancelotti showing faith in the Santos star despite ongoing concerns about his fitness. The experienced forward’s inclusion came as several attacking players, including Chelsea’s Joao Pedro, missed out on a call-up.

Ancelotti trusts Neymar despite recent injury doubts

Carlo Ancelotti has named Neymar in Brazil’s World Cup team even though questions persist about the 34-year-old’s physical readiness. The national team’s all-time top scorer, with 79 goals, returns to the international stage after recovering from a torn left ACL suffered in October 2023. Many observers and ex-players had speculated whether the Santos icon would make the final cut.

Since taking over as Brazil’s head coach in May 2025, Ancelotti had not previously included Neymar in his squads. The official announcement, made during a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, confirmed the veteran’s return and also brought disappointment for some attacking players. Pedro was among those left out as the Italian tactician opted for alternative options up front.

Ancelotti justifies Neymar’s inclusion

Explaining the decision, Ancelotti emphasised Neymar’s improved fitness and invaluable experience at the highest level. He also suggested that the forward’s role might differ depending on match circumstances.

“He has made significant progress in his fitness,” said Ancelotti, as reported by ESPN. “He will be a key player for us in this World Cup. He knows what it takes to perform in such tournaments, he has the affection of the group, and he helps build a positive atmosphere around the team.”

“We didn’t select Neymar thinking of him as a backup. We brought him because we believe he can make a difference — whether it’s for one minute, five minutes, ninety minutes, or even in a penalty shootout.”

Pedro among those to miss out

While Neymar’s return captured headlines, several big names were left disappointed by the final squad list. Youngsters Endrick and Rayan received their first-ever World Cup call-ups, edging out Chelsea’s Pedro and Real Betis’ Antony for the remaining forward positions. The fierce competition for attacking spots ultimately favoured youth as Ancelotti looked to inject fresh energy into his lineup.

The omission was a bitter pill for those left behind. Reflecting on his exclusion, Pedro expressed his emotions on social media, stating, “I always tried to give my best. Sadly, this dream of representing my country at a World Cup wasn’t to be, but I remain calm and focused as always. Joy and disappointment both come with football. I wish the best to my teammates, and I’ll be cheering for them to bring the sixth title home.”

Brazil gearing up for group stage

Brazil will kick off their World Cup campaign against Morocco in New Jersey on June 13, followed by clashes with Haiti and Scotland in the group stage. Before the tournament begins, Ancelotti’s men will play two warm-up fixtures — facing Panama and Egypt — to fine-tune their preparations.
