Christophe Dugarry has delivered a fierce criticism of Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to bring Neymar back into the Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup. The former France international, who famously lifted the trophy in 1998, argued that the move has turned the Santos forward into a “freak show” and reflects a worrying decline in the standards of the Selecao.

A controversial return for the Santos icon

Ancelotti’s choice to recall Neymar for the upcoming World Cup has sparked widespread debate across the global football community. After being absent from international football for three years, the 34-year-old’s comeback initially thrilled fans in Brazil. However, as the excitement cooled, many analysts began to question the wisdom behind the decision. While some supporters see it as a sentimental farewell for the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star, critics doubt whether Neymar, given his age and injury history, can still perform at the highest level.

Dugarry questions 'insincere' celebrations

Among those voicing strong opposition is Christophe Dugarry, a 1998 World Cup winner with France, who has dismissed the excitement around Neymar’s return as disingenuous. Dugarry described the situation as a “freak show,” expressing concern that it disrespects both the player’s legacy and the proud reputation of the Brazilian national team.

“These celebrations aren’t genuine. I sense a deep mockery behind Neymar’s selection. I’m starting to hear things like, ‘He’ll be injured before the tournament even starts,’ or ‘He’s gained weight’. I think a lot of people are turning him into a bit of a freak show. It bothers me. Neymar is contributing to that,” Dugarry said during an interview on RMC Sport.

Concerns over Brazil’s footballing standards

For Dugarry, Neymar’s return after years of fitness struggles is not just about one player but a reflection of deeper issues within the five-time world champions. He believes that depending on a star who is past his prime shows that Brazil’s talent pipeline or strategic vision may have weakened in recent years.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea. Selecting Neymar shows how far Brazil has fallen. To think Neymar is just another player is an illusion. I’m not convinced that this boy can still bring anything meaningful to this team,” he added.

The road to the 2026 World Cup

With the Brazilian squad set to gather at Granja Comary on May 27, Neymar faces immense pressure to silence his critics. Brazil are scheduled to play a friendly against Panama at the Maracana Stadium on May 31 before travelling to North America. Under Ancelotti, the Selecao will face Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland in Group C at this summer’s World Cup.
