What was the Silverline Project?
The ‘Silverline Project’ was an ambitious semi-high-speed rail project of the previous Pinarayi Vijayan government, estimated to cost around Rs 64,000 crore. The objective of this project was to connect the northern and southern parts of Kerala through fast rail connectivity.
This scheme, about 529.45 km long, had received in-principle approval from the Railway Board on 17 December 2019. The government claimed that this project would give a new impetus to the development of the state.
Why was there protest?
This project was continuously opposed by Congress, BJP and many environmental organizations. Opponents said that the project passes through wetlands, paddy fields and hilly areas, which could cause serious damage to the environment.
Additionally, it was feared that more than 20,000 people might face displacement due to the project, leaving a large number of people homeless.
