Ray Parlour says Arsenal must strengthen at striker ahead of next season

Arsenal great Ray Parlour believes Mikel Arteta’s team should make a major investment in the squad this summer, even after performing strongly across all competitions this season.

The Gunners are on the verge of what could be a historic campaign.

With just two matches separating them from potential glory in both the Premier League and Europe, this season could either be remembered as one of the finest in the club’s history or as another case of missed chances.

Parlour, who played a key role in Arsenal’s famous ‘Invincibles’ side that went unbeaten through the 2003–04 Premier League season to lift the title, feels his former club will see this as a missed opportunity if they fail to secure both trophies.

Parlour’s main emphasis is on recruitment, particularly in the striker position, and he pointed to Viktor Gyokeres, who joined for a significant fee last summer.

“Gyokeres has had his highs and lows this season, no question,” Parlour told FourFourTwo on behalf of 10bet. “The big highlight was his two goals against Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – both were excellent strikes.”

“But I think he’s really improving now. The fans are recognising his work rate. In Europe, especially against Atletico Madrid, he was superb. They simply couldn’t deal with his strength and the way he turned defenders.”

“Sometimes, you need to play to his strengths a bit more. They often try to build from the back, but maybe moving the ball forward more quickly could suit him better. Still, it’s his first season.”

“He came from Sporting Lisbon – with all due respect to the Portuguese league, it’s easier to score there than in the Premier League. So he deserves the benefit of the doubt this year. Let’s see how he develops next season.”

“Hopefully, he’s adapting now and will continue to improve. He’ll get to know his teammates’ movements better too. He’s done reasonably well overall.”

Parlour also wants to see new signings brought in next season to ensure Arsenal don’t have to take the title race to the final games again.

“It all depends on who leaves,” he explained. “There will be a few departures, I’m sure. The left-hand side will be interesting – it depends on what Trossard and Martinelli do. There might be a gap there in midfield. I’ve always said, if West Ham get relegated, go for Bowen – I’m not sure if he can play there, but he’s a great option.”

“And the striker area really needs attention. You could also argue for right-back cover, since Timber has missed much of the season. He’s one of the best in the Premier League when fit, but he’s been out for a long time.”

“We’re not sure about Ben White’s future either. But when you look at it, the striker role is crucial. You need depth. When I played, we had four top forwards – Dennis Bergkamp, Nwankwo Kanu, Sylvain Wiltord, and even Francis Jeffers one season. You need that variety. Jesus seems likely to move on, so the striker position is the most important area to strengthen next year.”
