The Met Office has responded to weather forecasts showing a potential heatwave across parts of the UK in time for the Bank Holiday weekend. The weather service has updated its projections for the weekend and suggests that a period of "unsettled" weather could bring with it some hotter than usual temperatures.
A temperature rising chart shared by the Met Office shows a spike in weather conditions between Wednesday and Friday. A predicted 8C increase has been mapped by the service, which shows that the average temperature could leap from 20C on Wednesday, to 24C on Thursday, and reaching highs of 28C on Friday. The average temperature shared on the graph could prove promising to those hoping for a heatwave this Bank Holiday weekend.
A statement from the Met Office has told Brits to brace for what could be volatile weather conditions, with showers and sun both possible.
The statement reads: "The UK's cool and unsettled weather will make way for increasingly warm conditions on Friday, with the warmest day of the year so far on the way and pleasant weather at times through the weekend.
"Rain and cloud continues to affect the UK over the next few days, keeping conditions unsettled, with Wednesday seeing variable cloud and outbreaks of rain, particularly across northern areas."
Sunday is likely to maintain these warmer than usual conditions. The weather service added: "Sunday sees high pressure becoming the dominant influence, reducing rainfall chances and allowing temperatures to remain above average. This follows through to the start of next week with warm and fine weather likely for many."
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tony Wisson added: "The weather later this week will feel like a marked contrast from recent days, with warm, fine and settled weather for many. While the warmth will persist through the Bank Holiday weekend, conditions will turn more unsettled later Friday and into Saturday, with a mix of cloud, showers and longer spells of rain.
"There is also the chance of thundery rain in places. Nonetheless, temperatures should remain warm or very warm through Saturday and into Sunday, with highs around 26°C in the south across the weekend and into next week."
Further coverage from WXCharts suggested there could be highs of 29C in London, with surrounding counties set to enjoy the warmer weather too.
The Met Office defines a heatwave as "when a location records a period of at least three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold."
