The leader of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, addressed the recent remarks made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath regarding prayers conducted on public roads. He emphasized that many events in the state occur on the streets due to a lack of space, arguing that such issues should not be politicized. During a gathering in Lucknow, Yadav stated that everyone deserves equal treatment, as guaranteed by the Constitution. He pointed out that numerous events, including their press conference, take place on the streets, and the government also holds its functions there due to inadequate arrangements.
Yadav further noted that despite Lucknow being labeled a smart city, traffic remains slow. He insisted that no one should face disrespect or discrimination based on their religion, reiterating that the Constitution provides equal rights for all. He criticized the ruling party, claiming that they aim to distract the public with such debates. Yadav asserted that his party advocates for the widening of roads and accused the BJP of deliberately raising these issues to divert attention from pressing concerns. He called for discussions to focus on public issues rather than being steered in another direction by the BJP.
This response from Akhilesh Yadav came after Yogi Adityanath warned against praying on the streets, suggesting that such religious practices should be conducted at designated places of worship. During an event on Monday, Adityanath stated that his government would not allow roads to be blocked for prayers or any other religious activities.
He remarked that roads are meant for transportation, not for gatherings. Adityanath questioned who has the right to obstruct the streets, urging individuals to visit their designated places of worship for prayers. His comments come ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, which will be celebrated on May 28. He advised the community to consider praying in turns if necessary and suggested that if there isn't enough space at home for everyone, population control should also be contemplated.
