India now in petrol Moving rapidly towards blending more ethanol. The government has started technical preparations for E22, E25, E27 and E30 fuels, going beyond the current E20 scheme. This means that 22%, 25%, 27% and even 30% ethanol can be blended into petrol in the future.

It is clear from this decision of the government that India now wants to reduce its dependence on foreign crude oil. Energy security has recently become a major concern due to rising tensions in West Asia and frequent fluctuations in crude oil prices. Against this backdrop, the government is working on a long-term plan.

In a notification issued on May 18, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued standards for new fuel blends. These new rules came into force from 15th May 2026. Currently, E20 fuel, which mixes 20 percent ethanol with gasoline, is being implemented across the country. The government decision comes at a time when the US-Iran war has closed the vital Strait of Hormuz sea route, putting pressure on global crude oil supplies.

What will be special about the new rules?

The new BIS standards specify technical requirements for engines and vehicles running on high-ethanol fuel. They focus on fuel quality, octane level, sulfur limits, water content, vapor pressure, corrosion protection and fuel stability. The goal of these regulations is to ensure the safe and efficient performance of future flex-fuel and high-ethanol vehicles.

Welcome from the ethanol industry

Organizations to the ethanol industry have welcomed the government’s decision. According to him, this will enable utilization of excess ethanol production and promote clean mobility in the country. According to industry figures, India’s ethanol production capacity has reached around 2 billion litres, but its procurement from oil companies has so far been limited to around 1 billion litres.
