Mumbai: At present, the summer mercury has risen well across the country and severe heat wave is being witnessed. This rising temperature has started affecting not only human health, but also the vehicles running on the roads. Mainly CNG This season of summer is considered to be very careful for motorists using cars. With the skyrocketing prices of petrol and diesel, lakhs of citizens are opting for CNG cars to get better mileage at a lower cost, but if not taken care of properly during summers, it can lead to major accidents.

Carelessness can be a major cause of accidents

Often citizens neglect the maintenance of CNG cars after purchasing them. This mistake may not seem serious in winter or rainy season, but in summer this same carelessness can lead to major accidents. Excessive temperature creates additional pressure on CNG tanks and gas pipelines. Failure to perform timely servicing and inspection can lead to serious incidents like gas leakage, engine failure or vehicle fire. For this, let’s find out which parts of the car are mandatory to check in summer.

1. Never ‘full’ the CNG tank

It is not considered safe to fill CNG cylinders to full capacity i.e. ‘full’ during summer days. As the outside temperature is high, the gas inside the cylinder starts to expand, which increases the internal pressure tremendously. If there is not enough space for the gas to circulate, the risk of technical failure or leakage increases. According to automobile experts, it is beneficial to keep some space in the CNG tank empty during summer. It is considered safer to fill gas 2 to 3 kg less than the total capacity of the cylinder.

2. If you smell gas, don’t ignore it

If you smell a strong smell of gas in or around the car, don’t dismiss it as normal. This can be an early indication of a gas leak (CNG Leak). In case of such suspicion, immediately park the vehicle in a safe place and switch off the engine and contact an authorized service center. A seemingly small gas leak can turn into a major fire in no time, so don’t compromise on safety.

3. Inspection of CNG kits and pipelines

A thorough inspection of CNG pipelines, regulators, fittings and other connections is essential in summer. Where gas pipes in a car are cut, corroded, or have loose joints, those parts should be replaced immediately. Regular servicing not only maintains the safety of the car, but also improves the performance of the car.

4. ‘Hydro test’ must be done on time

‘Hydro Test’ is considered very important to check the internal strength and capacity of CNG cylinders. This test shows whether the cylinder can withstand high gas pressure in the future or not. It is mandatory for every vehicle owner to take this test after a specified period as per rules. Old and weakened cylinders can be more dangerous in the summer, so a hydro test should be done immediately if overdue.

5. Take care of the engine and spark plugs

A CNG car engine runs at a higher temperature than a normal petrol car. The possibility of engine overheating is more in summer. In such a case, it is important that the car’s air filter and spark plug are in proper condition. A damaged spark plug puts extra stress on the engine, while a dirty or dusty air filter can drastically reduce a car’s mileage.
