Summer holidays are almost upon us, and with millions of Brits preparing to jet off abroad, it's crucial to be aware of the rules at airports. Although some airports have begun to phase in the new rules around liquids, others are still enforcing the current 100ml rule.
Under the current rules, all liquids must be carried in a single clear plastic bag and no more than 100ml per item. However, new technology is allowing passengers to keep all their toiletries in their luggage and in some airports, travellers can carry up to 2 litres of liquid. Neil Atkinson, managing director of travel firm Luxury Group Stay, said the rollout could make a major difference for families and group travellers this summer.
He said: "Airport security has always been one of the most stressful parts of travelling, especially for families juggling toiletries, baby milk, sun cream and electronics.
"The new CT scanners are creating a much smoother experience for passengers. Not having to unpack liquids or worry about tiny bottles speeds everything up and removes a lot of unnecessary hassle before people even get on holiday.
"The biggest issue right now, though, is confusion. Travellers may assume the rules are the same everywhere, and they simply aren't. Someone flying out from Heathrow could have a completely different experience to somebody departing from Manchester or Stansted."
That's why it's crucial to check the rules at the airport you are flying out from - and also the return trip. Many airports overseas are still using the old system, with stricter liquid limits.
He added: "The safest approach is still to check the exact guidance for every airport you're travelling through. It only takes one airport sticking with the old rules for items to be confiscated."
