Deadline reports that Ella Enchanted, originally released in 2004, is poised to be reimagined as a brand-new streaming series, penned by Ilana Wolpert (Anyone But You), with Beth Schwartz (Dead Boy Detectives) coming on board as showrunner.
The project is currently in the early stages of development for Miramax Television and Paramount Television Studios.
Departing from the original film, the series will reportedly centre on 16 year old Ella of Frell - inflicted with the curse of obedience - who is dispatched to boarding school following the sudden death of her mother.
Once there, "she begins to uncover the truth about her curse, builds an unlikely found family, and deals with an extremely inconvenient crush on the prince of her kingdom", according to the first details from Deadline, reports the Mirror.
Both the film and the forthcoming series are loosely adapted from Gail Carson Levine's beloved novel of the same name, though the boarding school setting did not feature in the original screen adaptation.
The fresh academic setting for the Disney+ series draws upon four chapters from the source material, taking clear inspiration from Netflix's hugely popular Wednesday series, based on the Addams Family franchise.
The project remains in early development, so watch this space for further updates.
Fans of the hit Jenna Ortega-led fantasy drama are sure to be delighted, as Ella Enchanted is set to be produced by iGen Studios - the very company behind the equally beloved young adult series My Life with the Walter Boys on Netflix.
Over two decades on, the original film starring Hathaway as the spirited Ella, who embarks on a quest to uncover the truth about her magical curse, remains a firm favourite and is widely regarded as one of the Devil Wears Prada star's most defining roles.
One nostalgic fan on Rotten Tomatoes hailed it the "best childhood movie ever!" in a glowing five-star review.
"This is no joke one of the best movies ever made," someone agreed on Letterboxd.
Meanwhile, a 10/10 review on IMDb enthused: "Heartwarming. Really just a feel good movie with one of the best actresses of our time.
"Makes you laugh, smile and really reaches your heart. Absolutely love."
The original picture also boasted an impressive ensemble cast, featuring Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), Cary Elwes (M.I.A.), Minnie Driver (Run Away), and Amandaland stars Joanna Lumley and Lucy Punch.
Ella Enchanted (2004) is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
