Nationwide issues update over future of all its high street branches
- Nationwide Building Society previously pledged to keep all 605 of its high street branches open until at least 2030, bucking the trend of major bank closures
- The mutual also promises to maintain the 91 Virgin Money branches it acquired in 2024. This guarantee comes as rivals like NatWest and Santander have closed several outlets in recent weeks.
- The group was asked if it could extend the pledge beyond 2030. A Nationwide spokesperson said: "We extended our branch promise last November, ensuring all Nationwide and Virgin Money branches will remain open until at least 2030."
- The building society is also expanding services including dementia clinics at Virgin Money branches. These offer 45-minute slots with specialist nurses for anyone affected by the illness.
- Branch usage has increased in recent years, particularly where other banks have closed locally. Services on offer in branch include Nationwide's Scam Checker, Safe Spaces for domestic abuse victims, and Digital Lessons.
- Nationwide members also await news of this year's Fairer Share bonus payment. Over four million customers received £100 each year for the past three years, with the announcement about this year's payment due on May 21.
