Indonesia and Thailand, Southeast Asia’s largest economies, have started monitoring travelers at international entry points following the World Health Organization declaration of the Ebola outbreak in Africa as an international public health emergency.

“We are closely monitoring travelers, particularly from outbreak-affected countries. Suspected cases will be referred to designated hospitals and reported through the national emergency response system,” the Indonesian Health Ministry’s communications chief Aji Muhawarman told the Between news agency on May 18.

The government is also coordinating with hospitals and public health agencies to improve early detection and response capacities, he added.

Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, received 3.44 million foreign arrivals in the first quarter, up 8.62% year-on-year and marking the strongest quarterly performance since 2020.
