Chikkamagaluru: A man was taken into custody after allegedly attacking government officials and police personnel who had gone to stop a child marriage at the Hakkipikki Colony near Mallenahalli in Chikkamagaluru district.
According to police, officials from the Women and Child Development Department, along with the Mallenahalli PDO and staff, rushed to the colony after receiving confirmed information about a child marriage being conducted in the area.
As a crowd gathered at the spot and tension increased, Rural Police Station Sub-Inspector Raghunath S.V. and jeep driver Sunil Kumar reached the location to provide security to the officials.
While the officials were explaining the legal consequences of child marriage to the public, a man identified as Sachin (29) allegedly obstructed Sub-Inspector Raghunath and pushed him during the duty.
When jeep driver Sunil Kumar tried to intervene, the accused allegedly assaulted him on the face and body and also tore his police uniform.
Police said the accused later attempted to escape from the spot but slipped and fell, suffering a head injury.
Injured police staff member Sunil Kumar was admitted to the Chikkamagaluru District Hospital for treatment.
A case has been registered against the accused at the Rural Police Station for assaulting police personnel and obstructing government duty.
