No Dual Connection Rule: Due to the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, the country is currently facing a shortage of LPG. However, the government is taking rapid steps to address this situation, including the accelerated expansion of the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network. Amidst these efforts, the government has also taken a major decision regarding the domestic cooking gas system. Starting July 1st, the 'No Dual Connection' rule is set to come into effect across the country. Under this rule, a single household will now be permitted to hold only one connection—either LPG or PNG. If a consumer currently holds both connections, they will be required to surrender one of them. Failure to do so could result in the automatic suspension of the LPG connection.
What is the 'No Dual Connection' Rule?
According to the new rule, no consumer will be permitted to simultaneously hold a subsidized LPG cylinder connection and a PNG connection. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have been instructed not to authorize new LPG refills or bookings in households where an active PNG connection already exists. The objective of this measure is to ensure that a single family cannot avail the benefits of dual subsidies.
Surrender Required by June 30; Otherwise, Connection Will Be Suspended
As per government guidelines, consumers holding both connections must surrender one of them by June 30. Failure to comply will result in the automatic suspension of one of their connections starting July 1. The government has also clarified that while limited exemptions may be granted under specific circumstances, persistent violation of the rule could lead to penalties or the permanent cancellation of the connection.
Oil companies and gas distributors have been directed to identify households holding both connections through data analysis and field surveys. Surveillance efforts have already been intensified in several major cities, including Delhi. According to government statistics, more than 43,000 consumers have surrendered their LPG connections so far.
A Major Decision Amidst the Energy Crisis
Currently, the entire world is grappling with disruptions in gas supply. India relies heavily on imports for crude oil and gas; consequently, tensions in West Asia and international fluctuations also impact the country's energy supply.
