Rare 'blue micro Moon' will appear in UK on 1 date in May

A rare blue micro moon will be visible in UK skies this month in a phenomenon that only occurs every two to three years. Stargazers will be able to spot the blue moon, which is named after its rarity rather than its colour, on Sunday, May 31.

Despite this, the infrequent second full moon in a calendar month occasionally has a blue hue, caused by dust particles in the atmosphere. The last blue moon was recorded in August 2024, according to Royal Greenwich Museums.

This month's phenomenon will be especially noteworthy because of its concurrence with a celestial event known as the micro moon. This is what happens when the moon reaches its furthest point from earth, thought to be around 250,000 miles away, making it smaller and dimmer than usual.

Among the best places in the UK to see the moon later this month are dark sky areas like Northumberland National Park, the Lake District, due to its low levels of light pollution, and Stonehenge, for similar reasons.

Brits may also be able to view the lunar phenomenon from their gardens, so long as there are open views and clear skies.

Professional astrologer Antonella, of Psychic World, said: "While the micro moon may appear smaller than usual, the UK's beautiful natural landscapes offer a chance to see it at its best.

"Whether it is rising over ancient monuments, mountain peaks or dark sky reserves, there are multiple ways to enjoy this once in a blue moon event."

The blue micro moon will look like a normal full moon to the naked eye, with the best time for spotting it thought to be just after sunset, when it is easiest to see and appears at its brightest.

While visible without a camera or telescope, the phenomenon can "really benefit from magnification", Psychic World suggests.

"Binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens can help reveal that extra beauty and detail on the lunar surface and enhance the overall experience," it said.
