On the occasion of the birthday of Malayalam cinema superstar Mohanlal, the third part of his much-awaited film series ‘Drishyam’ is being released. Director Jeetu Joseph’s film ‘Drishyam 3’ was greatly awaited by the fans. The film is going to be released in theaters across the world on May 21. Film lovers have already booked tickets for the first show of the first day. Huge crowds and packed shows are expected in theatres. During the Covid-19 pandemic, ‘Drishyam 2’ was released directly on Amazon Prime Video, but now with ‘Drishyam 3’ the makers are making a grand comeback on the big screen.

When will be the OTT release date?

Even before the release of the film, the deal for its OTT release has been finalized. According to sources, ‘Drishyam 3’ will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video about a month after its theatrical release. This means that this film can be seen at home in the last week of June or the beginning of July. The first and second parts of ‘Drishyam’ series are already available on Prime Video. According to the contract between the producers and the OTT platform, a theatrical window of at least 30 to 35 days will be kept. Following this rule, the film will be brought to the online platform only after its theatrical release.

Dispute between Amazon and Ashirwad Cinemas

In the month of April, Amazon had issued a public notice clearly telling everyone that all the digital rights of ‘Drishyam 3’ are with them alone. The company warned that no other company or person can try to sell, license or give these rights to any third party. Amazon Seller Services Private Limited said in its statement that Aashirvad Cinemas or any of their licensees have no right to give the digital rights of the film to anyone else. If any platform or person violates these rights then he may have to face legal action. Amazon has also reserved the right to take legal action demanding a restraining order and damages. This controversy was much discussed before the release of the film. However, the manufacturers have not yet given any official response on this.

The journey of success of ‘Drishyam’ franchise

‘Drishyam’ series is one of the most successful franchises of Malayalam cinema. The first film was released in the year 2013. The second film came in 2021 (directly on OTT due to Covid). This series has been remade in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and many other languages. These films entertained the audience a lot in every language. According to reports, a budget of around Rs 100 crore has been spent in making the Malayalam version of ‘Drishyam 3’. This is the most expensive film of the series so far.
