“Green tea is the most evidence-backed option for lowering triglycerides because it contains natural compounds called catechins,” explains Whitney Stuart, M.S., RDN. The most abundant of these catechins is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), an antioxidant that possesses potential heart-health benefits. We spoke with dietitians to learn more about how green tea can support healthy triglyceride levels.

The antioxidants found in green tea, like EGCG, help neutralize harmful molecules called reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can damage cells and contribute to high triglyceride levels.
EGCG has been shown to be linked to lower oxidative stress markers while supporting protective enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD). These changes not only support healthy triglyceride levels but also promote overall cardiovascular health by preventing the chain reactions that lead to artery damage and inflammation.

One study showed that when patients with NAFLD were given 500 milligrams of green tea tablets twice daily for 12 weeks, they showed significant improvements in lipid accumulation in the liver. Lipid metabolism is the process your body uses to break down and manage fats, including triglycerides. When this process is disrupted, triglycerides can build up in your blood, increasing your risk of heart disease. Research suggests that EGCG in green tea may help regulate lipid metabolism by improving how your body processes and utilizes fats. This means your body is better equipped to use fats for energy rather than storing them.
Incorporating Green Tea into Your Routine
- Steep your tea correctly. Boiling water can scorch delicate green tea leaves, resulting in a bitter taste and potentially destroying some of the beneficial catechins. “To maximize the antioxidant benefits without ruining the flavor profile, steep your green tea in hot (not boiling) water for about three to five minutes,” Toby Amidor, M.S., RDN, CDNadvises.
- Enjoy it cold. If you prefer a cooler beverage, opt for an iced green tea. “An iced version of green tea will still fuel your body with EGCG,” Amidor shares.
- Mix matcha into daily foods. If you do not enjoy sipping on loose-leaf green tea, try matcha, a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. You can blend matcha powder into morning smoothies, stir it into your oatmeal, or mix it into plain Greek-style yogurt for a nutrient-dense snack.
Other Tips for Triglyceride Management
While green tea is a fantastic addition to a heart-healthy lifestyle, it is not a stand-alone cure. True cardiovascular health requires working with your health care providers and taking a holistic look at your daily habits. Stuart highlights that “context matters: no tea can reverse the effects of a high-refined-carb diet, which is the primary cause of elevated triglycerides. Green tea is most effective when incorporated into a broader approach that limits added sugars, refined grains and alcohol.” To actively lower and manage your triglycerides, consider implementing these additional habits:
- Avoid or limit alcohol. Alcohol can raise triglycerides. It also adds extra calories, which can lead to weight gain and further increase triglycerides. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation or avoid alcohol altogether.
- Cut back on sugary foods and drinks. Overconsumption of high-sugar foods and beverages, like baked goods and sugary sodas, can elevate triglycerides. These foods should be limited and enjoyed in moderation.
- Focus on healthy fats. Replace foods high in saturated fats, like red meat and butter, with foods that are high in unsaturated fats. Use small amounts of vegetable oils (e.g., olive, canola or safflower) and incorporate nuts, seeds, nut butters and avocado in your meals.
- Exercise regularly. Regular physical activity helps your body burn triglycerides for energy and supports overall heart health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, such as brisk walking, swimming or cycling.
