If you're looking for coastal charm, the capital city, Funchal, offers colourful markets, botanical gardens and a picturesque harbour filled with cafés and restaurants.

One person who visited on TripAdvisor said: "These gardens are well worth visiting when you visit Funchal. Beautifully laid out with water features everywhere.
"Easy cab ride or bus up from town if the cable car is not running which it wasn't when we went."
Another must-see place is Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools. You'll find a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the clear pools while looking out across the expansive ocean and rock formations.
If you plan to visit, you should take some snorkelling equipment as it's a popular spot for looking at the sea life below.
For hikers, Madeira is home to fascinating routes. You can take one of the area's so-called "Levada" walks, which are trails that run alongside irrigation canals - these hikes are usually tucked away in forests and lead to waterfalls.
With temperatures of up to 23C in June, you're sure to enjoy some sun while in Madeira.
National Geographic says: "With its volcanic landscapes, laurisilva forests and bracing Atlantic waters, Madeira offers a gentler kind of wellness escape - one where open-water swims, botanical gardens and slow walks among ancient levadas invite the body and mind to reset."
It adds that a trip to Madeira is the "escape your nervous system needs."
If you're looking to book a trip away, this could be the perfect place for you.
