Only 5GB storage without phone number verification
Previously, all new Google Accounts automatically came with 15GB of free cloud storage. But, under the new policy, new users will initially be given only 5GB of storage space. The remaining storage will be available only when the user verifies his phone number.
This new policy affects three main Google services:
Gmail
Google Drive
Google Drive
Google Photos
Why has Google made this change?
Google has implemented this policy mainly to deal with fake accounts and automated bots. The Company believes that many users and automated systems frequently create new accounts to take advantage of free storage.
By requiring phone number verification to access the full storage limit, Google aims to:
Prevent fake or spam accounts
Preventing misuse of free cloud storage
Improve account authenticity and security
