New Delhi: Posting selfies on social media has become a common lifestyle these days. Especially while getting photographed, people often make Victory or Peace Sign, but do you know that this pose can become a big danger for you? Let us tell you, recently cyber security experts have warned that with the help of AI technology, hackers can steal your fingerprints from your photographs. What is worth noting is that this threat is not just about privacy but can also lead to theft of your identity and financial loss.
Live demo shown on TV
Recently, cyber security expert Li Chang showed a live demo of this threat in a Chinese TV show. He told that with the help of modern AI tools and photo enhancement technology, fingerprints of any person can be extracted from photographs. In the demo, he used a celebrity’s selfie to prove that a large amount of fingerprint data can be stolen from the fingers shown towards the camera.
According to experts, if the photo is taken from a distance of about 1.5 meters and the tips of the fingers are clearly visible, then the fingerprints can be extracted almost completely. Even in images taken from 3 meters away, more than half the data can be captured. AI based image enhancement tools are capable of making even blurry images clearer.
Why is this so dangerous?
Experts say that this threat is more serious because passwords can be changed, but biometric data like fingerprint and face recognition are permanent. If this information gets into the hands of cyber criminals, then incidents like bank fraud, identity theft and digital account hacking may increase. Therefore, it is being advised to be more careful while sharing photos on social media.
Cyber attacks are happening
Meanwhile, reports have also revealed that many cyber groups associated with China, Russia and North Korea are making the attacks more dangerous by using AI technology. With the help of advanced AI models, malware is now being developed rapidly and cyber attacks are being carried out on a large scale. On the other hand, AI company Anthropic has also stopped releasing its new AI model Mythos publicly. The company says that if this technology falls into the wrong hands, it can become a major threat to the global security and financial system.
