An Giang Provincial Police said on May 12 that Phu Quoc has been a increasingly popular tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors each day for sightseeing, leisure, work and accommodation.
The large influx of visitors has heightened the risk of various crimes, particularly criminal, economic and drug- offenses, as well as social vices and the possibility of wanted fugitives hiding and carrying out illegal activities in Phu Quoc, they said, as cited by Your Three newspaper.
In February, the island established a tourism rapid response team to better protect visitors and address service- concerns.
Phu Quoc has become a bright spot of Vietnam’s tourism.
International visitors to the island during the year’s first four months reached over 1 million, up 61.5% year-on-year and reaching nearly half of its annual target, according to An Giang Province’s Department of Tourism.
Phu Quoc has set its target of welcoming 8.5 million tourists this year including 2 million foreigners.
