Knews Desk-A major change has been made for LPG consumers in the country. The government has now strictly implemented the “One Household, One Connection” rule, under which it is completely banned to have both a subsidized LPG cylinder and a piped natural gas (PNG) connection in the same family.

As per government instructions, households which already have a PNG gas connection will no longer be allowed to get a new connection or refill the LPG cylinder. At the same time, consumers who have both the connections will have to surrender one connection. Oil companies have also been given clear instructions to stop LPG supply to homes with dual connections.

The government says the move is aimed at preventing misuse of subsidies and making the gas distribution system more transparent. In many cases, it was found that some consumers were availing both the facilities at the same time, thereby misusing the government subsidy. Under the new rule, oil companies have also been directed to update their database and identify households that have both the connections. The refill facility of such consumers may be stopped and they will be asked to surrender one connection first.

According to government officials, this policy has been brought to ensure better utilization and equitable distribution of energy resources. Also, in view of the global energy crisis and supply fluctuations, the government wants the use of domestic fuel to be in a more controlled and systematic manner. Experts believe that in the coming time, the impact of this rule will be seen more in big cities, where the PNG network is growing rapidly. The government’s focus is now on unifying all gas connections through a digital database and e-KYC, to increase both transparency and control in the system.

In this way, this new rule has brought a major change in the LPG distribution system of the country, which will have a direct impact on crores of consumers.
